What is a CAE material card?

A CAE material card is a parameter file that describes how a material behaves mechanically inside finite-element software. It converts the stress-strain curves obtained from real tensile, shear and fatigue tests into mathematical model parameters the solver can read.

An accurate material card is the foundation of simulation credibility — wrong material parameters make results diverge sharply from reality, leading to failed development or safety issues.

◆ Fewer physical prototypes, shorter development cycles
◆ Coverage of extreme conditions (high-speed impact, fatigue loading, high and low temperatures)
◆ Support for crash safety, mould-flow analysis, durability and other simulation scenarios
EXAMPLE // stress-strain curve → material card
! MAT_SIMULATION_LABEL
RO = 1.15E-9 # Density (g/mm³)
PR = 0.42 # Poisson's ratio
SIGY = 42.5 # Yield strength (MPa)
ETAN = 850 # Plastic hardening modulus
DT = 1.0E-6 # Bulk viscosity

Calibration workflow

From test data to a deliverable material card — a standardised seven-step process that keeps every parameter accurate and traceable.

01

Constitutive model selection

Select the optimum constitutive equation from material characteristics and simulation scenario

02

Test data acquisition

Define and execute a test programme based on material type and loading case

03

Raw data processing

Stress-strain curve processing: noise removal and normalisation

04

Initial parameter fitting

optimisation-based parameter fitting against the measured curves

05

V&V validation

Feed the calibrated parameters back into simulation and compare against the original test data

06

Sensitivity analysis

Identify sensitive ranges of key parameters and assess robustness

07

Card delivery

Standard-format material card plus a parameter description report

Project workflow

Step 01 — Requirements

Kick-off and programme agreement

Understand the customer's simulation scenario, target solver and accuracy requirements, then define the test and calibration programme.

  • Test matrix prepared and agreed to the customer's specification
  • Constitutive model selection confirmed
  • Test items and delivery milestones fixed
Step 02 — Testing

Mechanical property testing

Run the agreed tests and capture high-quality raw stress-strain data.

  • Standard specimen preparation (laser cutting / machining)
  • Loading on INSTRON / MTS high-accuracy equipment
  • High-speed camera / DIC strain-field acquisition (optional)
Step 03 — Data processing

Raw data processing and fitting

Convert the raw force-displacement curves to engineering stress-strain and clean the data.

  • Cross-sectional area normalisation
  • Extensometer data processing
  • True stress-plastic strain curve extraction
Step 04 — Calibration & delivery

Material card generation and validation

Generate the material card, run V&V validation and deliver the complete data package.

  • Constitutive model parameter optimisation
  • Simulation back-check (overall error < 15%)
  • Material card + parameter report + raw data
